About This Visualization

Learn about San Jose's spending priorities by breaking down spending by each department.

Instructions: The graphs on top show the trends in SJ government expenditures (general fund) broken down by major categories. Click a dot on the right to see the break down into more specific subcategories for any particular category and two more graphs will appear below showing the trends for each subcategory (such as police, fire, and sheriff within public protection). Use the drop down menus to see percentages instead of totals and to adjust for population growth.

Sources: The San Jose Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports found on the city controller's website. CACS is not responsible for the accuracy of data received from outside sources. Please email us at info@cacs.org if you believe you have found an error in the visualization.
