Teachers' Unions

What's the Story

The California Teachers Association (CTA) donated nearly $1 million to state legislators within 30 days of votes that the CTA took a stance on. The recipient of each gift voted according to CTA preferences 72 times in 2009-2010, meaning that more than half of the time legislators voted as the CTA desired on legislation.

What's At Stake

School Teachers
The CTA has historically supported and lobbied for policies that increase teacher career security but decrease quality of education. For example, California teachers achieve tenure after only a few years, meaning that bad teachers cannot really be fired. Politicians should be fair to teachers but not let CTA lobbying lead to costly or ineffective policies.
